Steve represents small to mid-size businesses and their owners on a broad range of Corporate and Business Law, Tax Law and Commercial Real Estate Law matters. Steve also represents individuals in Estate Planning and Estate Administration matters as well as on Tax Law and Real Estate matters.
Steve’s business practice includes the formation, financing and development of business entities, including Limited Liability Companies, C-Corporations, S-Corporations and partnerships, the representation of business entities and their owners in business acquisitions and sales transactions, and advice with respect to business structure issues and succession planning.
Steve’s Estate Planning and Estate Administration practice includes advising business owners, managers, professionals and other individuals in preparing their estate plan, including advising such clients on any relevant business succession planning. It also includes serving surviving families of deceased persons in the administration of estates.
Steve’s Tax Law practice complements his other practice areas. Steve’s experience as a tax attorney allows him to advise individuals and business clients on the tax consequences of forming business entities and of commercial transactions and to devise plans to mitigate negative tax consequences. He also advises elder law and estate planning clients on estate and gift taxation and strategies to minimize the impact of such taxes. Steve has also represented clients in disputes with taxing authorities.
Additionally, Steve represents clients in general litigation matters and has acted as trustee in bank foreclosures.
Steve is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Hampton Bar Association, the Newport News Bar Association and the Hampton Roads Tax Forum. Steve is also involved in community organizations, including the Rotary Club at City Center and the Kiwanis Club of Tidewater Young Professionals (Board Member).
Before joining McDermottWard, Steve advised U.S. and foreign entities on the tax and legal aspects of complex international and domestic transactions and planning in the Washington, D.C. office of a large, multinational law firm. Prior to moving to Washington, DC, Steve was a corporate law associate with the largest law firm in Delaware.
Steve, a graduate of Menchville High School, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1999 and law degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law in 2002. He also holds a graduate legal degree in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center.
